First Fruit

“The strawberry wants to live in my tummy,” the little one said, her brow furrowed with worry and her eyes still sleepy in the new day’s light. “Squirrels eat nuts AND fruit,” she said as she rushed to the back door. After rescuing the berry, she and her mama squatted and examined the fruit, still in need of a bit of ripening. The little one, triumphant, cupped her mama’s face in her hands and announced with a grin, “Let’s go check on the tomatoes.”
